Do Letters Live?

Submitted by Robin Brandenburg on Mon, 11/14/2011

Last week this Marble got to attend the NAEYC conference. Exploring the exhibit hall was especially fun. I had to pry myself away from the cool tactile materials like bubber and Insta-Snow. I realize my friends in the North may not have the same appreciation for Insta-Snow as this Southerner. However, I did see something that I think would capture their attention--Letters alive by Logical Choice Technologies.

Letters alive is designed for young children and uses Augmented Reality (AR) to reinforce: letter recognition, learn sight words, and building sentences. There are 26 AR-infused letter/animal cards and 94 Dolch word cards (also known as sight words). Each card has a different letter or word on it. Kids can see animals like Gerdy Giraffe in 3D, watch a video of her, see the uppercase and lowercase letter G, and hear the sound it makes. That's not all! The cards can sense each other. So kids can arrange cards to form sentences and questions. As sentences and questions are assembled learning truly comes to life! Imagine assembling the question "What do giraffes eat?" and watching Gerdy the Giraffe stretch her long neck from one card to another to eat leaves off of a 3D tree! And did you know that giraffes can swim? Check it out!
