Designing a game-based world to build lifelong financial habits

The Challenge

Financial habits begin forming by age seven — yet financial literacy instruction for elementary students is often abstract, inconsistent, or disengaging. FitMoney sought a way to teach complex money concepts to K–6 learners in a format that was developmentally appropriate, motivating, and accessible both in schools and at home.

The challenge wasn't just content — it was behavior change at scale.

In partnership with FitMoney, Six Red Marbles designed and developed $uperSquad, a game-based learning platform that transforms financial literacy into an immersive, narrative-driven experience.

Together, we set out to move beyond traditional curriculum models and create a learning environment where students actively practice financial decision-making through play, story, and exploration.

The Strategy

SRM applied a learning experience design approach that blended:

  • Game-based pedagogy grounded in real-world financial scenarios
  • Narrative continuity to sustain engagement over time
  • STEAM-aligned activities to support critical thinking and creativity
  • Flexible implementation for both classroom and at-home use

This strategy ensured that financial literacy concepts were not only taught, but experienced and reinforced.

What SRM Designed & Developed

Working in close collaboration with FitMoney, SRM designed and developed the full $uperSquad experience, including:

  • An original animated universe with an ongoing storyline
  • Customizable student avatars that promote identity and agency
  • Interactive modules combining video, gameplay, and assessment
  • Embedded formative assessments aligned to learning goals
  • A scalable platform adaptable for school and family learning environments

SRM led learning design, creative development, and production from concept through launch.
