Ask an Expert: James Peters

James Pepers, Team Lead Instructional Designer - Ask an Expert

About You and Your Role

Can you introduce yourself and describe your role at Six Red Marbles?

I’m James Peters, and I’m a Team Lead Instructional Designer. I work with clients to help them plan and develop instructional materials.

What excites you most about working here?

Three things: the opportunity to build innovative learning experiences for our clients, the opportunity to work with some of the smartest and wisest people I’ve ever met, and the opportunity to learn new and interesting things every single day.

Industry Insights and Trends

What is one major shift you’ve noticed in education, content, or instructional design recently?

Obviously, AI is the major shift – just in the past 6 months, it’s been incorporated into our media tools like Storyline and Premiere. Turns out that one of the things that Claude and ChatGPT can do very well is think like an instructional designer! It’s a very exciting time to be developing instructional content, because if you can describe it, you can design it!

In your opinion, how is technology (AI, microlearning, immersive media, etc.) changing educational solutions?

Again, all the innovation these days is around AI. I think AI will ultimately result in much more personalized courses. What would that look like in a higher education setting? I am also curious to see its impact on accessibility, because the QA tools are getting more intelligent. I’m thinking specifically of the new accessibility checker tool in Storyline.

Six Red Marbles’ Impact

Can you share a project you’ve worked on at SRM that you feel made a significant impact?

I recently worked on a course development project in which all of the images and voice-overs were AI-generated in Storyline. Two hours of content with a ton of images. That was a first. And the results were very good! That was unimaginable even a year ago. I don’t know if that counts as a significant impact, but it does seem to point the way to what lies ahead.

How does SRM’s approach stand out in the industry?

Besides the great work we do and the skills we bring to our projects, I think we are the nicest people to work with. I think that really shows up in the results we are able to achieve with our clients.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone interested in a role like yours?

Embrace AI.
