The Challenge

Discovery Education set out to create its first all-digital math program for middle and high school learners—one that would move beyond static textbooks and foster deeper understanding through inquiry, interaction, and real-world relevance. The challenge was to design a digital-first experience that could engage students, support teachers, and align to standards, while standing apart in a crowded K–12 math market.

The Partnership

Six Red Marbles partnered with Discovery Education to conceptualize, design, and develop an inquiry-based digital math textbook. Working closely with Discovery Education’s content and product teams, SRM helped translate a bold instructional vision into a cohesive, scalable learning experience built for digital environments.

The Strategy

SRM applied a learning experience design approach that blended:

Design rich, real-world scenarios to ground mathematical concepts

Engage students through interactive, media-rich experiences

Support development of 21st-century skills such as collaboration and argumentation

Encourage teachers to act as guides rather than directors of learning

Embed Common Core State Standards throughout the program

This strategy ensured that financial literacy concepts were not only taught, but experienced and reinforced.

What SRM Designed & Developed

Working in close collaboration with FitMoney, SRM designed and developed the full $uperSquad experience, including:

All-digital, inquiry-based math textbook for middle and high school

Interactive simulations, games, and hands-on activities

Video-based investigations and self-directed projects

Accessibility support, including alt text for all images and equations

Design guidelines, checklists, and rubrics to ensure consistency and quality

SRM led learning design, creative development, and production from concept through launch.

The Learning Experience

The digital Techbook invites students to actively explore mathematical ideas rather than passively consume content. Learners engage with scenarios, media, and investigations that encourage reasoning, collaboration, and explanation helping them see math as both useful and meaningful. Teachers are supported with clear structures that enable facilitation and discussion rather than direct instruction.

The Impact

The resulting program delivered a dynamic, student-centered learning experience that went beyond engagement to foster deeper understanding. By combining inquiry-based design with rich digital media, the Techbook helped students develop both conceptual knowledge and confidence in mathematics.
