Co-Designing Youth Substance-Use Prevention: RM-PHTC + Six Red Marbles

How RM-PHTC and Six Red Marbles partnered to create a culturally relevant, non-punitive online curriculum centered on youth voice and public-health impact.

In collaboration with and with funding from the Community Prevention and Early Intervention (CPEI) unit of the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE), Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center (RM-PHTC) engaged Six Red Marbles to transform a substance-use prevention curriculum into an interactive online educational application. The goal: build an accessible, culturally relevant alternative to punitive discipline that supports skill building and healthy behavior change in adolescents.

Q1

What has it been like working with Six Red Marbles?

The team is adaptable. They’re able to communicate and adjust timelines as needed based on funding/contract structures. While we were paired with SRM team members in multiple time zones, we were able to easily communicate, coordinate, and manage team calls that included team members from both organizations based on everyone’s work schedules.

Q2

What stands out about SRM’s collaboration or approach?

This project involved young people who were part of the project team. SRM was collaborative in engaging young people in project decisions as well as being able to lay out options and feasibility when needed to help with making project decisions.

Q3

How has SRM’s work supported RM-PHTC’s goals or initiatives?

Building out an alternative to punitive discipline substance use curriculum was a unique project that required multiple different project team members and organizations to tap in at various places. SRM supported the development of the curriculum and bringing it to life—in doing so, this online education curriculum can support the delay of substance use among young people in a way that recognizes where young people are at.

Q4

Would you recommend working with SRM, and if so, why?

Yes—the relational aspect of working and collaborating with SRM was delightful. There was professionalism as well as authenticity in project calls that created a collaborative atmosphere. The final product and delivery of the product were met with the necessary timelines and being able to adjust pivots in funding streams as well.
