American Student Assistance

Redesigning financial education to increase student engagement and participation

The Challenge

American Student Assistance (ASA) needed to refresh its online financial education program, SALT, to better engage college students and recent graduates navigating student debt and personal finance. While the content was strong, the existing lessons lacked the interactivity and clarity needed to motivate participation in a topic many learners find daunting or tedious.

The Partnership

Six Red Marbles partnered with American Student Assistance to redesign all 12 SALT lessons, working closely with ASA’s internal teams to preserve instructional intent while improving usability and learner engagement. SRM’s creative and project management teams collaborated with ASA to ensure the redesigned lessons aligned with the program’s mission to provide simple, smart, and personalized financial education.

The Strategy

SRM applied a learning experience design approach that blended:

Reframing dense content into short, focused learning segments
Introducing interactive elements to reinforce understanding
Designing mobile-friendly layouts for learners accessing content on the go
Streamlining navigation to support completion and return visits

This strategy ensured that financial literacy concepts were not only taught, but experienced and reinforced.

What SRM Designed & Developed

Working in close collaboration with FitMoney, SRM designed and developed the full $uperSquad experience, including:

Redesigned all 12 financial education lessons
Improved visual hierarchy and page layout for clarity
Embedded interactive questions and participation points
Optimized lessons for accessibility and cross-device use
Coordinated production and delivery across the full lesson set

SRM led learning design, creative development, and production from concept through launch.

The Learning Experience

The redesigned SALT lessons present financial concepts in a way that feels approachable, relevant, and manageable. Learners move through content in shorter segments, encounter interactive prompts that reinforce key ideas, and experience a smoother, more intuitive flow, helping reduce overwhelm and increase confidence.

The Impact

The redesigned lessons led to higher levels of student engagement and interaction. Learners were more likely to participate actively and respond to embedded questions, transforming financial education into a more engaging experience.

Across the program, ASA’s learners have now engaged with and answered over one million questions, a meaningful indicator of participation and sustained interaction at scale.

Why It Matters

Financial literacy is critical, but engagement is essential for impact. By redesigning the SALT lessons to be more interactive and learner-centered, Six Red Marbles helped ASA reach more students with content they are more likely to complete, understand, and apply, supporting better financial decision-making beyond the classroom.
